PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand the objectives and statutory requirements pertaining to health and safety in the workplace. The learners will be able to explain the rights, powers, functions and duties of the workplace health and safety representative and how any errant health, safety and environmental issues may be handled. Learners will also be able to participate in the safety, health and environmental structures and measure these activities according to health, safety and environmental requirements.

• Describing the framework of workplace health and safety legislation pertaining to health and safety representatives.
• Explaining the specified requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities at a workplace.
• Addressing safety, health and environment-related issues within their scope of authority.

This unit standard will be useful for persons who are required to conduct continuous hazard identification and risk assessment within an underground working place to ensure a healthy and safe environment to work in.

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to develop, implement and monitor a Health and Safety site plan, identify specific hazards related to the construction environment and supervise the implementation of steps to limit damage to persons and property.

Business Hours
For individuals, training commences at 8:30 AM from Monday to Friday. Time variations are pre-arranged, particularly for those who are working. Weekend classes are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays upon pre-request.

For Companies, training commences at 8:30 am after registration of candidates. We adhere to the company policies on tea time and lunchtimes.

Requirements:
Requirements of an individual on commencement of training:
1. Swazi identity card / valid passport documents
2. Candidates for Machine operators must come with safety shoes when going for practical
Requirements of the company on commencement of training:
1. A dedicated boardroom or a space conducive to the training environment.
2. Dedicated machine/equipment for practical training and assessment.

Training Delivery Methods
We deliver our courses through theory and practical presentation. Theory presentation techniques vary according to the audience. We engage trainees by allowing them to express their views and opinions, which makes them feel equally involved. Such an approach gives an insight why safety is important hence safety culture is gradually grasped. Practical presentation is conducted at the workplace. Trainees are allowed to evaluate themselves in groups. This creates a vibrant atmosphere and promotes employees to safeguard each other even when performing their duties.
